About Thomas Jefferson Hot Air Ballooning in Charlottesville, Virginia

....Come see Charlottesville the way it was meant to be seen — from above.....

At Thomas Jefferson Hot Air Ballooning, ballooning is more than a scenic ride — it’s a lifetime story rooted right here in Central Virginia.

MEET YOUR PILOT – J.R. WINGFIELD

MEET YOUR PILOT – J.R. WINGFIELD

J.R. Wingfield was born and raised in Charlottesville and is a fifth-generation local. Growing up on a farm gave him an intimate knowledge of the land, the people, and the history of Albemarle County. He understands the landscape not just from the sky, but from the ground up — including the changes time has brought to the area while its natural beauty has remained constant.

Ballooning found J.R. in an unexpected way. Another balloon pilot frequently landed on his family’s farm and needed a chase crew. J.R. needed a job. Knowing the area and the local landowners made him a natural fit. That opportunity in 1982 sparked what would become a lifelong career in hot air ballooning.

He earned his pilot license in 1986, beginning the formal journey toward becoming a commercial balloon pilot.

THE PATH TO BECOMING A COMMERCIAL PILOT

To earn a sport pilot license, a balloonist must complete a minimum of 12 hours of flight time and instruction. When the instructor believes the student is ready, they authorize a solo flight by signing the pilot’s logbook. After soloing, the pilot must pass a written examination and complete a flight evaluation with an examiner who determines readiness for certification.

Once licensed as a sport pilot, additional flight hours are required — typically around 32 hours total — before qualifying to take the commercial written exam. After passing the written test and successfully completing a commercial flight evaluation with an examiner, the pilot earns certification as a Commercial Hot Air Balloon Pilot. J.R. often compares his first solo flight to the first time driving a car without parents in the passenger seat — exciting, a little nerve-racking, and unforgettable.  In 2016, he purchased his own balloon, continuing a journey that now spans more than four decades in the air.
